EXIF vs XMP vs IPTC: What Each Metadata Format Stores

EXIF, XMP, and IPTC are often shown together in photo software, but they are not interchangeable. EXIF is strongly associated with capture data, IPTC defines professional descriptive and rights fields, and XMP is a flexible storage and interchange framework that can carry many schemas.

EXIF focuses on capture and technical data

Cameras and phones commonly write EXIF when they capture an image. Typical fields include make, model, lens, exposure time, aperture, ISO, focal length, orientation, date, and GPS tags. Manufacturers may also add maker notes that require vendor-specific interpretation.

EXIF values can be changed by software, and editing exports may preserve only a subset. Treat them as declarations in the file rather than immutable facts.

IPTC defines meaning for publishing and rights

IPTC Core and IPTC Extension define photo-oriented properties used by photographers, newsrooms, archives, and stock agencies. They cover captions, headlines, creators, credits, keywords, locations shown, copyright notices, licensing, and more detailed descriptions.

Modern IPTC properties are commonly expressed through XMP, while legacy IIM storage still exists. This is why an application may label a field IPTC even when its technical representation is inside an XMP packet.

XMP is an extensible metadata framework

XMP uses namespaces so multiple schemas can coexist. It can carry Dublin Core, Photoshop, IPTC, rights, editing, rating, and application-specific properties. The packet may be embedded in a supported image or stored beside a raw file as an XMP sidecar.

Because XMP can repeat or map values found elsewhere, a file may contain more than one apparent creator, date, or description. Software applies reconciliation rules that are not always identical.

Side-by-side example

One edited photograph can legitimately contain all three families.

The group name describes the field system or namespace, not necessarily a separate physical block in every file.
